Blazing Line

A little paint goes a long way.

At Envirespect, we’re lucky enough to spend an abundance of our time in the forest of New Hampshire, but only rarely do we get to do it without toting around some form of technology necessary for our job. Sometimes you have to put away that technology and get back to simplicity. For a recent boundary line blazing project, that’s what we did.

We started by researching the plans and deeds for the parcel. The next step was to get the documents and the reality of what’s on the ground to mesh, not as easy as it sounds. We then shot bearings with our compasses on multiple occasions and combined this with past evidence we found during our recon such as old tree blazes, boundary flagging and our corner pins, which enabled us to find our line. Then we cut away the brush to give a clear indication of said line. This was the prep for the best part, hacking and painting our boundary lines.

To follow a blazed line all you need to know is that the blaze faces the direction of the property line, within several feet, and if a tree has blazes on opposite sides, it’s a boundary line tree. Blazing is a great way to demarcate lines especially on large forested tracts as flagging doesn’t last long but the distinct blaze is there as long as the tree is.
